Sophia Conroy-Iglesias (b.1999) is a British-Spanish artist and designer from London. She holds a BA in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, UAL (London, UK)
Sophia’s practice typically explores themes of intimacy, culture and feminism through photography, painting and handcrafted publications. She enjoys creating new typography for clients and projects, playing with found imagery to create and/or showcase compelling stories.
Influenced by Old Master drawings, English Renaissance, Dada collage and 21st century animation, her works provide a rich and dynamic vision of the female form. Within Conroy-Iglesias’ scenes, the female forms are often placed in the context of Shakespearean narrative and timeless myth. Through her storytelling and emotive portrayals of the feminine, her paintings allow us to explore the connection between femininity, intimacy and vulnerability, marked by an overall feeling of empowerment and vitality. Confined within the edges of the canvas, each piece wades the depths of the artist’s subconscious, further explored through poems written at the back of each work; a distinctive artistic note to accompany each scene.
Her background in graphic design allows her to explore the effects of appropriation on the everyday. In 2022, Sophia's graduate project, Shitty Gritty London, became part of the permanent collection at the Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection
